The state budget approved in the first reading in the Knesset encourages idleness, sets back education and closes the economy to options for lowering the cost of living

On the eve of the 75th Independence Day of the State of Israel, it seems that the call from the national anthem "to be a free people in our country" has not been heard so clearly in a long time.

But it must be remembered that the freedom that everyone is talking about includes individual freedoms, including economic freedoms, which unfortunately in the State of Israel are still limited compared to many countries in the free world.

In the steadfast struggle waged by Israeli society for political freedom and for us to be a free society, we should remember, precisely in preparation for the approval of the state budget, the statement of the winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, Milton Friedman: "Economic freedom is also a necessary means of achieving political freedom" (from "Capitalism and Freedom" Shalem issue) Therefore, a policy that does not promote the economic freedom of the citizens, necessarily harms their ability to achieve political freedom.

To what future does the State of Israel condemn the children who study in institutions where they are denied English, math, science and computer studies? (Photo: ShutterStock)

Avoiding work is encouraged

In the upcoming budget, the State of Israel is expected to put its hand into the pockets of all citizens who work and pay taxes in order to double the yeshiva budget and increase the pensions of the youth.

All this, in order to encourage that population not to go out to work and in practice prevent them from their economic independence.

Not only that, but the Israeli government wants to approve a huge sum of NIS 1.7 billion for the budgeting of institutions that do not teach core studies (basic studies in state education) - math, English, science and computers.

To what future is the State of Israel condemning the children who study in these educational systems, without having any choice at all?

What is promoting a leadership that prevents children from basic education and the acquisition of skills that will allow them to earn a living as mature and independent citizens in the State of Israel?

The OECD organization stated in its annual report that allowances and discounts for the elderly constitute negative incentives to go to work.

Thus, in practice, another burden is created on the general public, who is required to pay more taxes in order to pay for a growing population, whose leaders do everything to keep it poor and supported.

The Bank of Israel report stated that a Jewish household pays NIS 4,500 in taxes and mandatory payments per month, compared to NIS 1,250 in an ultra-Orthodox household, while in allowances the picture is reversed and an ultra-Orthodox household receives an average of NIS 4,000 per month in allowances and transfers compared to NIS 2,300 received by a non-Orthodox Jewish household

. It is not a decree of fate. It is a policy that curtails freedom and harms all citizens, religious and non-religious. It denies the freedom of the citizens of Israel and harms the children's future.

Close the economy

Alongside this, the cost of living is breaking records and Israeli citizens also suffer from a closed and regulated market.

The free choice is not given today to the citizens of Israel when they enter the marketing networks, when they do business or when they want to bring to the people of Zion an excellent product that is produced overseas.

Last Passover, the basket of products became more expensive by between 7.5% and 10%.

But the State of Israel, instead of opening the market, closes it.

During my tenure as Minister of Agriculture, I broke ground in opening the market to competition, so that the citizens of Israel could purchase fruits and vegetables in a wide variety and at a fair price.

I removed the protective caps and transferred the support to the farmers to a route of direct support.

At the same time, I submitted regulations to the Economic Committee, which, if approved, would make it easier to import and allow fruit to be imported already this summer.

Unfortunately, with the establishment of the new government, these regulations were shelved.

Due to the pressure of the budget department, they now appear in the Settlements Law, but even if they are approved and not excluded from there, the citizens of Israel have already lost the coming summer.

The organizing times will not allow fruit to be imported here in a way that will dramatically affect the price.

Honey and olive oil were an excellent example of the effect of an open market on prices and competition - the import quotas I gave during the previous government brought goods here at imaginary prices of one third and a half of the price.

The consumption of these products has increased and in practice we have enabled more citizens to purchase products that were previously avoided because of the price.

Unfortunately, instead of expanding the operation and opening the market fully, the quotas ended and were not renewed, and Israeli citizens returned to paying exorbitant prices.

Therefore, on the eve of Independence Day and towards the approval of the budget, it is important that the citizens of Israel remember that a free nation also requires a free economy, and we will continue to fight for it.
