Due to the
skyrocketing prices of vegetables, meat, milk and dairy products
, basic foods increased
more than 10% in April in the City of Buenos Aires.
And they accumulate a rise of around
38% in the first 4 months of the year
, led by meat and vegetables.
In relation to average inflation, food prices
are more than 8 points ahead of the average price rise.
Due to the incidence of food in the general index,
the Buenos Aires average inflation in April would have been around 7.8%.
In March, it was 7.1%.
Consequently, far from slowing down,
Buenos Aires inflation took another leap,
driven by supply problems as a result of the drought, by the rise in financial dollars in the last week of the month and the greater official devaluation of the peso.
However,
with the decline in the value of alternative dollars,
at the start of May
prices continued to rise,
especially the so-called regulated prices, due to increases in prepaid fees, transportation, electricity and other items.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages weigh an average of 17.1% in CABA
.
It is the item with the highest incidence in the Buenos Aires general index of consumer prices.
In the rest of the country the weighting is greater.
especially in the northern regions (NOA and NEA).
But as low-income families allocate almost 100% of their meager income to food,
the rise in food prices continues to hit the poorest and fixed-income households the hardest, such as wage earners and the population that receives aid of the State.
It is estimated that the family poverty basket, without rent, should be around $210,000,
a figure that is far from the salaries of unregistered wage earners and an increasingly larger portion of registered wage earners.
These values explain why indigence continues to grow because, although there were higher levels of employment, precarious jobs are concentrated in the informal sectors, with lower incomes, and also because wage increases for formal workers were and continue to be below inflation.
In the City of Buenos Aires in the fourth quarter of 2022,
poverty was 16.9% of households (228,000 families) and 22.1% of people (680,000).
Indigence reached 5.4% of households (73,000) and 7.7% of people (237,000), according to the report of the Directorate of Statistics and Censuses of the CABA.
