Who smokes more women or men, how much money is spent on smoking until quitting, and who hurts the most in their pockets? Almost a quarter of a million shekels. The average age at which smoking is started is 16 and 8 months, the average age of quitting is 38. Most smokers reach a respectable output of 21 years of smoking before quitting, with 34% of them having tried quitting at least once.

Alan Carr of the Movement Group, which according to its testimony has weaned tens of thousands of Israelis to date with the world's leading method of addiction cessation, conducted for the first time in Israel the smoking cessation report on the occasion of World Smoking Day, based on those who quit over the past year, which examines when, why and how much money and health are "wasted" until they reach withdrawal from the terrible habit.

According to the report, the average age at which smoking is started is 16 and 8 months, the average age of quitting is 38 and most smokers reach a respectable output of 21 years of smoking before quitting, with 34% of them having tried quitting at least once. Unfortunately, only about 16% of quitters smoke a single-digit number of years – that is, 9 or less before they quit.

10% of smokers take more than 40 years of smoking before quitting, and some quit even after more than 50 years of smoking!

Beyond the health cost, cigarettes have a heavy economic price, and the average quitter will spend about NIS 238,000 smoking before quitting smoking. The heaviest smokers who quit smoking for 40 years or more, about 2 packs of cigarettes a day, spent about a million shekels before they quit smoking.

Most of the smokers who quit consumed tobacco in more than one way: 82% smoked regular cigarettes, 31% smoked rolled cigarettes, 14% smoked tobacco together with a joint, 9.5% smoked an electronic cigarette, and 3.5% smoked hookah.

"It is important to clarify that the relatively low number of people quitting an electronic cigarette is due to a lack of awareness of the dangers of the electronic cigarette", explainsAssaf Ashkenazi, director of Alan Carr Israel activity, "The electronic cigarette may be more deadly than a regular cigarette because it can be smoked anywhere, it is not limited in time like a regular cigarette, does not emit an odor and as mentioned from the point of view of the smoker and his environment it is much less harmful than a regular cigarette and therefore the motivation to quit it, Much smaller"

Men smoke more cigarettes, women smoke more years

Most of those weaned are men: about 63% of those weaned compared to 37% women. Both sexes start smoking at the same average age of 16, but when examining who quits the harmful habit first, we find that women smoke about three years more before quitting – about 23 years of smoking on average versus 20 years of smoking for men. Women can take comfort in the fact that they smoke less: about 18 cigarettes a day on average compared to about 20.5 cigarettes smoked by men.

Smoking is also painful for young people: the reasons for quitting smoking have no differences in terms of gender and all quitters have more than one good reason to quit smoking:

72% decide to quit for health reasons. 22% are simply tired of the bad habit, 15% do it because of social or family pressure to quit smoking, 14% do it because of the smell.

11% of those who quit smoking declare that they do so because of the cost, and here is a surprise - about a quarter of them are young people in their 20s, usually still without children and a mortgage to pay, but the economic cost of cigarettes is still high for them.

About 2.5% quit smoking because of age, a similar percentage do so because of unpleasantness to smoke in an environment that mostly does not smoke, and about 2% do so because of hygiene.

Ashkenazi: "There is no reason to wait and smoke for 20 years before going to rehab. Most quitters manage to smoke after one workshop and never smoke again. There will always be good excuses not to quit smoking, but there are much better reasons to quit and the fact is that people manage to do it even after 40 and 50 years of smoking."
