Private salaried employment grew by 0.4% in the first quarter in France with 86,800 net job creations, according to the final estimate published Thursday by INSEE. This estimate is twice as high as the provisional one published on 5 May. After +0.2% in the previous quarter, this is the ninth consecutive quarter of increase. Private salaried employment exceeded its pre-health crisis level (end of 2019) by 6.1% (or +1.2 million jobs).

In detail, temporary employment fell sharply this quarter: -2.2% (i.e. -18,100 jobs). A decline that completely erases the increase of the two previous quarters. Temporary employment is 2.2% below its level in the first quarter of 2022 but 2.3% above its pre-crisis level. Excluding temporary employment, industrial employment rose again by 0.3% (+8,200 jobs) after +0.2% in the previous quarter. It is 1.2% higher than its level a year earlier and 1.8% above its level at the end of 2019.
In construction, employment fell by 0.1% (i.e. -1,500 jobs). This was the first quarter of decline in this sector since the fourth quarter of 2016. However, it is 0.4% above its level of the first quarter of 2022 and 7.8% its level at the end of 2019. In the commercial tertiary sector, employment accelerated: +0.7% after +0.2% (i.e. +88,300 after +22,700 jobs). It exceeds its level of one year earlier by 2.3% (i.e. +290,500 jobs) and that of the pre-crisis period by 7.5% (i.e. +886,400 jobs). In the non-market tertiary sector, it also increased: +0.2% (or +15,200 jobs) after +0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022.
