While Bercy has been hammering home for several weeks its intention to find 12 billion in savings per year from 2025, the start of the year is rather gloomy for public finances.
The government had to take out the checkbook to calm the agricultural revolt which broke out two weeks ago with the installation of the first dam on the A64 south of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne).

“It is better to give up 50 million now than 500 million in two weeks,” said Gabriel Attal, Tuesday January 23, at a meeting of the Renaissance group in the Assembly, to justify the loosening of the purse strings.
Ten days later, however, the bill amounts to nearly 500 million euros for 2024, according to our estimates.
