Food prices in the world have been on a downward trend for about a year, but in Israel, where a significant portion of the food products sold and consumed are generally imported, the trend of increasing their prices continues.
The importers' announcement of an imminent increase in their price is especially outrageous in light of the difficulty that all Israeli consumers are feeling and will continue to feel in the current year of war, and in light of its lack of correspondence with the data of the World Food Price Index, which shows a decrease of about 1% in their price last January compared to the previous December, and of about 10.4% compared to January 2023.

Global wheat export prices also fell last January by about 2.2% as a result of what the organization calls "strong competition", and corn prices also fell with them as a result of improved crop conditions and the start of harvesting in Argentina and the USA.
The dairy product price index remained almost unchanged and also stands at About 17.8% below where it stood in January 2022, and this despite excess demand for butter and milk powder from Asia, which was offset by a drop in low-fat milk and cheese prices. The
prices of rice and vegetable oils did increase by about 1.2% and about 0.1%, respectively, last January, but still were lower than in January 2022. An example of this is the prices of vegetable oil (in which the prices of palm and sunflower oils rose, which were offset by a decrease in the prices of soybean oils) which were lower by about 12.8% compared to January 2023

Alex Tanzer, a social activist and chairman of the headquarters for the contractor's workers, told Walla! Money: "How is it possible that food prices are falling all over the world and only in Israel are they rising?
This is a horrendous distortion on the back of the Israeli citizen in any period, whether in peace and certainly in war.
"While all the workers in the economy suffer wage cuts and war taxes, which will reduce their ability to spend, the finance and economy ministers allow the importers and retailers to tear the pockets of the citizens. And to think that the citizens are also paying their inflated wages.
"Hundreds of thousands of contractor workers are paid minimum wage and continue to fight for their entitlement to minimal conditions , while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich distributes coalition funds, and Economy Minister Nir Barkat does not even manage to take control of the authorities subordinate to him.
