The leading producer of medicines in Europe twenty years ago, France is now relegated to sixth position.
The sector's trade balance is affected: for the first time in 2023, its balance is barely positive, at 300 million euros, while it amounted to 3 billion euros in 2022. Why such collapse?
France has never stopped producing or exporting medicines, but it is importing more and more of them, and more and more expensive ones.
Between 2000 and 2022, exports grew by 34% according to Rexecode, while imports grew by 53%.
The pharmaceutical industry has 271 industrial sites in France.
But the drugs that come out of these factories sell less well abroad.
They also produce too few innovative products with better value.
