The executive agrees with the PS.

The government supports the elimination of bank charges on certain inheritances, carried out by the socialist deputies as part of their day reserved for the Assembly scheduled for February 29, indicated this Tuesday the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire.

The proposed law provides in particular for the elimination of fees for closing accounts and paying to the heir the sums appearing therein when the deceased person is a minor or when the sums concerned are less than 5,000 euros.

The text carried by PS MP Christine Pires Beaune is on the agenda during a socialist “parliamentary niche”, after having been adopted unanimously in committee, with the support of the majority as well as other oppositions.

“Let’s not add a lack of humanity to the pain” of the loss of a loved one, the Minister of Economy and Finance wrote on X (ex-Twitter), indicating that he supports the initiative and has “ worked” with the elected socialist.

The minister cites in his message the case of Léo, who "was 9 years old when he succumbed to cancer": "after this terrible news, the bereaved parents asked their bank to close their child's booklet A" and “It then deducted 138.20 euros in bank charges”.

“As Minister of the Economy, I find this revolting.

As a father, I find this unacceptable,” he added.

“Help with rewriting”

The support of the ministry "translated into help in rewriting the text so that it is as clean and effective as possible", indicated Christine Pires Beaune, who wants parliamentarians to be associated with the decree implementing the text. , once it has been adopted.

Beyond cases of gratuity, the bill provides for a control of costs for inheritances exceeding 5,000 euros.

“Knowing that we can very well have much more than 5,000 euros and be part of a very simple operation to carry out and in which case it must also be free,” she clarified.

The MP deplores a banking sector that is “not very cooperative” on the subject.

“I am surprised by the lack of aggregated data” to quantify these costs, she stressed.

“Some banks already apply free fees”, but “you can have establishments, funds from the same group which do not apply the same fees on the same amounts”, added the MP, deeming it necessary to provide more transparency by law.
