On cycle paths, these cargo bikes have multiplied since their launch in 2007. If they transport children or animals, they are now dangerous for those who use them.
“Babboe has received a large number of reports of broken frames in recent years.
The company did not follow up on these reports or notify the NVWA as required by law
,” points out the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).
At the end of 2023, the organization is carrying out an investigation into the Dutch brand and highlights the risks linked to security in relation to the numerous executive ruptures.
If it occurs when the parent is rolling, the child can fall violently to the ground.
This is why the NVWA has forced Babboe to immediately stop marketing its models in all countries where the company is present.
The Dutch authority also advises bicycle owners to stop using them.
On its site, the cargo bike brand does not oppose this decision:
“As a precautionary measure, Babboe has decided to temporarily stop the sale of all cargo bikes.
In the meantime, we will follow the advice of the NVWA not to use cargo bikes.”
In addition to stopping marketing, the brand is also required to recall the following references: City/City-E/City Mountain, Curve/Curve-E/Curve Mountain, Big/Big E, Dog/Dog-E, Max-E, Mini-E/Mini Mountain, Pro Trike/Trike-E/Trike XL and Carve-E/Carve Mountain.
A hard blow for the brand which will now have to design more robust bike models to avoid accidents.
