The death of British banking tycoon Jacob Rothschild could ignite a "Heirs"-style battle between his descendants over his vast real estate and investment empire.

Lord Rothschild, who died last Monday at the age of 87, founded one of Britain's largest investment funds in 1961 - RIT Capital Management.

In the UK and in the financial world, one wonders which of his children will step into his big shoes in managing the economic empire he left behind, which also has affiliates in Israel since the Rothschild family is considered a large and well-known donor.

Rothschild had four children from his wife to whom he was married for more than 50 years, and who died in 2019.

The youngest of them and the only son is 52-year-old Nathaniel "Nat" Rothschild, who many consider the obvious candidate to inherit the management of the financial empire.

Nat has extensive business experience having, among others, led the investment consultancy JNR Limited, the coal production giant Bumi Plc and the Wall Street hedge fund Atticus Capital until it was closed in 2009.

He has served as the acting chairman of Volks, the manufacturer of Tesla, since 2015.

However, the relationship between the young Rothschild and his father was not good: Jacob Rothschild was known to dislike the lifestyle of his heir apparent, who lived a playboy life of parties and entertainment, and even Married model Annabel Nilsson in 1994 in Las Vegas. The marriage, which lasted three years, created tensions in the extended family.

Nat, who now lives in Switzerland, later refused to invite his father to his second wedding to model Loretta Basie in 2016.

Nat has no direct holdings in his father's foundation except through The Five Arrows family private equity fund.

The one who will compete with Nate for leading the family empire is his older sister, 61-year-old Hannah (Hannah) Rothschild, who recently emerged as the preferred heir.

Unlike her brother, Hana owns 10% of REIT Capital shares and serves as a director of the fund.

RIT Capital has already said that it is "proud that its connection with Lord Rothschild's family interests continues through his daughter, Hannah Rothschild, who has served as a director of RIT for over a decade."

Hana, who previously published various books, also serves as the chairman of Yad Hanadiv, the philanthropic foundation of the Rothschild family in Israel.

The other two sisters in the family - Beth, 60, and Emily, 56, remain out of the public eye and do not hold central positions in the family institutions.

The Rothschild dynasty was founded by Meir Amschel Rothschild in Frankfurt, Germany, in the late 17th century before branching out to several European cities.

Meir Amschel's son, Nathan Meir Rothschild, made his fortune in 1815 by buying British government bonds in preparation for Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.
