The 10% of the wealthiest households living in France own 54% of total assets, a stable figure since 2019, the Bulletin of the Banque de France indicated on Thursday.

This report also highlights that half of households living in France hold 95% of total wealth, wealth inequalities which however remain a little lower than in the euro zone.

Household wealth increased significantly in value between the end of 2009 and the end of 2021, by 23% in constant euros (corrected for price variations over the period).

It reached 14,041 billion euros in the second quarter of 2023, according to the Banque de France.

Inequalities in borrowing

This increase results first of all from the increase in the value of real estate assets from which the 60% of the wealthiest households benefited, who hold 99% of total real estate net of loans, specifies the study.

To a lesser extent, it is also explained by an increase in the value of professional assets from which the 20% of the best-endowed households benefited, as well as a fairly general increase in deposits and life and retirement insurance.

On average, the net wealth of a household in France is 446,000 euros, an increase of 13% in constant euros compared to 2009, and is mainly composed of real estate (55%) and financial assets ( 32%).

Half of households, however, have assets of less than 185,000 euros (+5% in constant euros over the period).
