Highlights: Mazarine Pingeot: “The next step is equal pay”. The political demand for equality must be permanent, she says. The fight must be fought in politics and there must be an institutional transformation, she adds. “I would look at countries like Afghanistan or Iran, but the women there take their own destiny into their own hands,” she says, “even if the fights are difficult.” “We hope to be able, one day, to do without it. It is obviously ridiculous to say that there is a women's day as if the other days were not...”

INTERVIEW - On the occasion of March 8, Mazarine Pingeot, who has just published a new essay, answers our questions on Women's Rights Day and its perspectives, a few days after the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution.

What is the value of Women's Rights Day

?

It has a value which remains essential even if we would like this day to disappear, to the extent that we no longer want to need it to alert, to remind us of real and formal inequalities.

But it is still essential to the extent that it is international or even universal: we can recall, from what we have acquired, the necessity of fighting for other women, elsewhere in the world.

When will we no longer need it

?

We hope to be able, one day, to do without it.

It is obviously ridiculous to say that there is a women's day as if the other days were not... The hope is that this day will become 360 others or disappear entirely because we would no longer have need her.

Which women still need to be saved

?

There are plenty of choices: I would look at countries like Afghanistan or Iran, but the women there take their own destiny into their own hands.

They take their destiny into their own hands everywhere, even if the fights are difficult and in a country like Iran they have difficulty making themselves heard.

What significant historical progress do you remember

?

Major milestones mark the progress of women's rights.

But above all I will remember a date that is a little different from that of the abortion: it would be that of 1982, the year of reimbursement by social security of the abortion.

Obviously, abortion was crucial but the fact that this right became real, that is to say that it could benefit everyone through reimbursement, made it even more concrete.

Both steps are necessary.

How can we get the different generations of women who fight for their rights to get along

?

Each generation is marked by its struggle according to its moment and its relevance to social evolution.

Sometimes, certain forms of combat can clash with past forms, although there are several places of convergence.

But it is the law of generations to confront and confront each other.

From this, new ideas are born, opportunities to meet on new grounds.

And to ensure that the generations talk to each other.

For me, for example, discussion with my daughters, even if we don't always agree, is extremely stimulating.

Fortunately, we do not always agree, because from these disagreements social progress is born.

What next for women's rights

?

To be pragmatic, it should be equality of salaries and equality of representation in assemblies and companies.

What else must we say to move forward

?

Difficult to say... The political demand for equality must be permanent.

It does not date from today and it must take political forms and not just social ones.

The fight must be fought in politics and there must be an institutional transformation.

In an ideal world, what should be included in the constitution

?

I don't know how to answer exactly.

Equality between men and women, between genders and minorities is enshrined in the Constitution.

What must be done is its application: the fight of women is to move as far as possible towards this ideal, stated in 1948.
