For the first time, France has become the second largest arms exporter in the world, after seeing its international sales increase by 47% over the period 2019-2023, compared to the period 2014-2018, according to the new report from reference from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri), published this Monday.
France has overtaken Russia, whose arms exports have collapsed (-53% between 2019 and 2023), inflicting a notable setback, in the context of rising tensions between Paris and Moscow, against a backdrop of war in Ukraine.
The two countries remain well ahead of the United States, whose international sales have further increased (+ 17%) and represent 42% of the total.
China (5.8%) and Germany (5.6%) rank 4th and 5th.
These five countries represent 75% of international arms sales.
