The idea was launched in the midst of the agricultural crisis under the name “Origin Score”.

The government indicated this Wednesday that the approach aimed at creating an indicator of origin of food products will be called “Origin-Info”.

This initiative received a unanimous welcome from the stakeholders concerned and specifications must be determined by May 1.

“We have decided that we are going to name this approach Origine-Info, the objective being to provide neutral and objective information on the origin of food products,” indicated the Minister Delegate in charge of Business, Tourism and Consumption Olivia Grégoire during a telephone press briefing.

The approach differs from Nutri-score, in that “the nutritional intakes are classified in a scientific manner”, which is “not at all transposable to the origins, especially if you intend to bring it to the European level” , indicated Olivia Grégoire.

Meeting with key stakeholders

This speech followed a meeting with representatives of mass distribution, agro-industrialists and consumer defense associations on the subject of transparency on the origin of ingredients in processed food products, this Wednesday in Bercy.

The Fraud Repression services (DGCCRF) were also represented.

Olivia Grégoire was delighted to have noted “a unanimously favorable reception from the stakeholders present”, for what will be a purely voluntary approach in order to remain within the framework of European law.

“Between now and May 1, we will work on enriching the proposed specifications” to determine the degree of precision of the information on the origin of the products included in the recipe, or the place where this information will be available on the packaging or online.

Professionals will also carry out a pre-selection of the logo to indicate this information, which will then be submitted to consumers, explained Olivia Grégoire.

In the context of the crisis in the agricultural sector, French farmers went to supermarkets to protest against certain products of foreign origin.
