On average, in the City of Buenos Aires, the income of the population in the
North zone is 93.5% higher than those in the South zone
, according to data for the fourth quarter of 2023 prepared by the Buenos Aires Directorate of Statistics and Censuses.
In turn, during the past year,
households in the South zone had a drop in income
in relation to inflation greater than those in the North zone, while
inequality was accentuated
.
It is estimated that due to the higher inflation in the first months of 2024, this deterioration was accentuated.
This gap only considers
total labor and non-labor income
, such as social assistance.
It does not take into account, for example, housing conditions, proximity to flood zones, as is currently happening.
The neighborhoods that are included in the South zone are La Boca, Barracas, Nueva Pompeya, Villa Riachuelo, Villa Soldati, Villa Lugano and Mataderos.
According to the official Buenos Aires report:
The
total average family income was $565,633
, which represented an increase of 159.2% compared to the same period of the previous year, 10.2 points below that corresponding to the IPCBA.
"On significantly lower values, households residing in the South of the City had a year-on-year increase of 155.5% (salary of ($452,138), below those in the North, whose increase was 174% (to $700,291) In the Center, total family income rose 154.3%," says the Report.
The per capita family income of households averaged $298,006,
165.2% above that recorded in the same quarter of 2022.
In households in the North of the City this income stood at $428,907
, while in the
Center It was $281,587 and in the South it was $190,916
.
"Households in the North, in addition to having better individual incomes, have
fewer members on average
, so they have a higher per capita family income, which is equivalent to more than twice that of the South."
The 30% of households with the lowest per capita income account for 38.5% of the people, but only 12.9% of the total income.
At the same time, those in the top 30% involve 23% of residents and more than half of the income group (53.1%).
The 10% of employed people with the lowest income received less than $80,000
in their main occupation.
In contrast,
the 10% of those with the best income exceeded $700,000
.
On average, the last decile earned 23 times more than the first.
Income distribution: there is a deterioration in measurements on both individuals and households.
The Gini coefficient of total family income was 0.427 (above the same period of the previous year, when it was 0.399, the higher the more inequality).
For the population, family per capita income increased to 0.446 (from 0.411 a year earlier).
Something similar occurred for the employed population, for which the Gini for income from the main occupation was 0.425, above that corresponding to the same period in 2022, when it was 0.388.
The Gini coefficient of income is a measure of inequality in income distribution.
If the coefficient increases, income distribution worsens and if it falls, inequality decreases.
