Julian Reichelt, editor-in-chief of the "Bild" newspaper, has to answer in a compliance procedure within the Axel Springer publishing house.

Around half a dozen employees reported incidents from previous years to the media company, and a team headed by Chief Compliance Officer Florian von Götz is currently investigating the matter.

Among other things, the investigation deals with the abuse of power and the exploitation of relationships of dependency.

In individual cases, Reichelt should face possible allegations of coercion and bullying, as reported by several people who are familiar with the matter.

The exact extent of the compliance investigation is currently unclear.

External law firm contacts employees

The publicly traded media group has turned the matter over to the law firm Freshfields for a careful review.

According to information from SPIEGEL, this has contacted several people affected and employees of the editorial team.

A spokesman for the Springer publishing house says that "as a matter of principle, no comments are made on internal processes".

Julian Reichelt has been editor-in-chief of the print edition of "Bild" since Tanit Koch left on March 1, 2018, and in February 2017 he took over overall editorial responsibility for the tabloid medium as the successor to Kai Diekmann.

Diekmann's departure from »Bild« was overshadowed by an investigation into sexual harassment.

However, the Potsdam public prosecutor had closed the investigation against the former editor-in-chief in August 2017 due to a lack of evidence.
