Climate Package: US airlines criticize federal government for ticket tax

2019-10-28T17:13:42.932Z

The federal government wants to increase the taxes on airline tickets - because of the climate. American airlines therefore complain to the EU that the tax is illegal.

From the point of view of several US airlines, including American Airlines and United Airlines, the climate tax planned by the German government violates international treaties. In a letter to the European Commission, Nicolas Calio, the director of the Airline for America (A4A), criticized the federal government's plan to lower VAT on train tickets and to increase ticket taxes on flights. This is what the "world" reported.

"The cross-subsidization of the railway at the expense of the airlines violates the US-EU Air Transport Agreement," wrote Calio - thus consumer tax on airline tickets should only serve to cover the cost of aviation itself. A tax increase was "problematic" and "undermined" a decision by the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO, according to which the global compensation system Corsia should be the only climate protection instrument in the industry.

"The burden on international aviation in this way is unnecessary and counterproductive for emission reduction," Calio continued. The airlines are losing revenue needed to develop climate-friendly aircraft and fuel, which would be more damaging to the environment due to a higher air ticket tax.
