Climate: Heat stress in the asphalt desert - How climate change is changing our cities

2021-07-27T07:34:07.596Z

Ever hotter years turn concrete castles into life-threatening ovens. Heat stress that claims human lives. How does urban space have to change to avoid that?

For several years now, we have been feeling the climate change and the associated rise in temperature in Germany too - it's too hot.

Heat record years like 2003 and 2018 have already claimed thousands of lives and we have to think about how we can protect people at risk from the high temperatures.

Big cities in particular are heating up more and more.

The urban areas are not yet prepared for the future: for what could come if we don't manage to stop global warming.

In addition, it is precisely the cities that emit many CO2 emissions.

Car exhaust fumes, air conditioning, large amounts of concrete used - all of this is bad for the climate and causes cities to heat up.

It takes innovative ideas and maybe even a reorientation of how cities should look.

In this episode, "Climate Report", the architect Tobias Nöfer shows us what is now necessary to make cities cooler.

And he explains how he envisions life in urban areas in the future.

How can cities adapt to climate change in the future and how can we protect ourselves from the effects of climate change - this is what we are talking about this week in the »Climate Report«, the weekly SPIEGEL podcast on the climate crisis.

The SPIEGEL podcast on the state of the planet appears every Tuesday on SPIEGEL.de and wherever there are podcasts.
