New Zealand postpones general election by four weeks due to corona pandemic

1:15 a.m.: New Zealand has postponed the parliamentary elections previously planned for September 19 by four weeks to October 17 due to the return of the coronavirus. "This decision gives all parties time to campaign over the next nine weeks and the electoral commission enough time to ensure that the election can take place," said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday.

Last Tuesday, the virus was transmitted within the country for the first time in more than a hundred days. Four members of a family in Auckland tested positive. In the previous 102 days, the virus had only been found in isolated cases in people who had come from abroad.

For residents of the largest city, Auckland, a new curfew was imposed on Tuesday, which was initially limited to three days. In addition, Ardern announced the day after that all old people's homes in the country would be closed to visitors.

The ship belonging to the shipping company "MSC Cruises" left the port of Genoa shortly after 7.30 p.m. with 2500 passengers on board. In the next seven days, it should call at several ports in the Mediterranean.

The cruise ship, which can normally take up to 6000 passengers, first sets course for the port of Civitavecchia near Rome. Then it should go on to Naples, Palermo (Sicily) and Valletta (Malta).

"I couldn't miss the first cruise to Covid," said Rosalba Scarrone shortly before the start. "I've made 87 cruises, can you imagine how much I suffered because I haven't been able to sail since February?" Asked the 64-year-old blogger who specializes in cruises.

Infections at Olympique Marseille - season opener in danger

As the Champions League winner from 1993 announced, three employees from the team's immediate environment tested positive for Covid-19. According to Ligue 1 hygiene and safety protocols, the cases could lead to the cancellation of Olympique's opening game against AS St. Etienne on Friday.

An employee from Marseille had already tested positive for Corona the previous week. As a precautionary measure, the test match against VfB Stuttgart scheduled for last Friday was canceled. After the last season was canceled, Ligue 1 will start the 2020/21 season as the first European top division on the weekend.

Spahn  worried about celebrations as a source of corona risk

11.45 p.m.:  Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn warns against the background of increasing numbers of new corona infections of celebrations as a source of danger. There are more infections from returning travelers, but there are also local outbreaks throughout the country, which are mostly related to celebrations, said Spahn in the ZDF "heute journal". "That is what we have to keep an eye on beyond traveling," emphasized the CDU politician.

When asked about new measures to contain the pandemic, Spahn said that from his point of view it made no sense to close retail stores or hairdressers again. You could continue there with everyday masks and distance. "Celebrations, events - there it is transmitted very, very quickly. That's why I think we have to look again with the countries: What are the borders, what are the rules for the sizes of events."
