Motorcycles are selling well in the corona crisis. The industry presents its innovations at the world's largest bike trade fair in Milan - and reveals a risky strategy for the drive system of the future.

While the automotive industry is suffering from a pandemic and semiconductor crisis, motorcycle manufacturers, at least in Europe, have hardly any problems with Covid.

Sales stagnated in 2020, including accessories.

But in the first nine months of 2021, a good 60,000 more motorcycles were registered than in 2019: 792,594 units (2021) versus 732,594 (2019).

This corresponds to an increase of 8.2 percent.

The fact that the important industry trade fair EICMA is much smaller this year is therefore not a sign of weakness.

All manufacturers switched to online communication and virtual presentations during the lockdown;

direct trade fair business has lost its value for contact with the target group.

Far fewer than the 800,000 visitors of 2019 are expected.

Important manufacturers canceled their participation at an early stage: BMW Motorrad, Ducati, KTM and other industry giants are saving the enormous trade fair costs.

Exciting motorcycles have nevertheless been announced for 2022: Honda is doing classic touring tours again, horsepower like those at Yamaha are always possible. But the trend is towards light, partly cheaper machines in the middle class between 700 and 900 cubic meters. Both new athletes and adventure travel motorcycles, for example from Husqvarna, Aprilia and MV Agusta, are entering the market in this segment.

When it comes to e-mobility, the big players in the industry are all gambling high - by leaving the playing field to the small series manufacturers: As long as it still seems to work, they are betting on their old bestsellers, conjuring up a future for the combustion engine and hoping for the use of e-fuels, synthetic gasoline, made from hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

Announcements are repeated, but still no big European or Japanese have an e-motorcycle in their portfolio.

The mental lockdown at the top of the company continues.

You can see our highlights of the fair here:

Honda NT1100: Modern Gran Turismo

Classic tourers hardly play a role in the registration statistics.

Honda still believes in the segment and presents the new NT1100.

The successor to the Deauville, which was built until 2005, is based on the Honda Africa Twin.

The Japanese have slightly modified the frame, tank and chassis.

As in the adventure bike, the two-cylinder engine with 1084 cubic meters produces 102 hp and switches automatically on request (DCT, 1000 euros surcharge).

Detachable side cases, luggage racks, center stand, cruise control and heated grips are standard.

The weather protection is impeccable, the workmanship meticulous.

Compatible smartphones (Apple CarPlay or Android Auto) reflect route guidance on the 6.5-inch color display.

Honda specifies a top speed of 200 km / h and a consumption of 5.0 l / 100 km, and makes 400 km on one tank of fuel in purely mathematical terms.

Start in December from 13,899 euros.

Triumph Tiger Sport 660: Triple power for the middle

The Trident 660 from Triumph has a unique selling proposition: the mid-range roadster is the only bike in its segment that uses a three-cylinder engine.

Sporty 81 hp, lively 64 Nm, long maintenance intervals of 16,000 kilometers - the concept is well received, so the British are stepping up.

The Tiger Sport 660 adds an affordable adventure bike to the Tiger family just in time for the 2022 season.

Topcase and side cases transform them into a motorhome in no time at all.

From 8700 euros, the all-rounder offers, among other things, two driving modes, traction control that can be switched off and full LED lighting.

Shift assistant, heated grips, connectivity module and A2 throttle kit are available at an additional cost.

All new Triumphs come with a four-year guarantee.

The Tiger portfolio rounds off the upcoming Tiger 1200 at the top.

However, it will not be shown until the beginning of 2022.

Ducati Streetfighter V2: Little Panigale without clothes

Ducati closes the naked bike gap between Monster (111 PS) and Streetfighter V4 (208 PS). Like its V4 four-cylinder sister, the new Streetfighter V2 with the »Superquadro« twin-cylinder largely corresponds to the superbike model. Stripped around the full fairing, it still offers massive pressure behind the high handlebars for the racetrack or country road. The power was cut a bit for the naked bike: 153 instead of 155 hp, 101 instead of 104 Nm - but that is hardly noticeable in these spheres.

An electronics package prevents the horses from going through with the street fighter: cornering ABS, traction control, quickshifter for clutch-free up and downshifts, everything is standard.

Likewise the "Wheelie Control".

This keeps the front wheel on the ground if desired.

The winglets are available for the racetrack for a surcharge.

Four small wings that are supposed to increase driving stability.

With an official top speed of 265 km / h, this is a very promising idea.

CFMoto 700 CL-X: Chinese scrambler with ambitions

Motorcycles from China do not have the best reputation. The look is usually boldly copied, the technology often lags behind European standards. CFMoto from Hangzhou in the province of Zhejiang wants to do better. After the successful 650 models, there is now the 700 CL-X. The Chinese model with the largest displacement to date mixes style elements from Ducati Diavel, Triumph Trident and Yamaha XSR.

The result is an appealing bike in the trendy scrambler style.

70 hp from two cylinders should be good for around 180 km / h.

4.8 l / 100 km, 800 mm seat height, 196 kg - the technical specifications give hope for a motorcycle suitable for everyday use that keeps what its looks promise on the road.

Two colors are initially available: blue-silver with a black bench and gray with a brown bench.

The most striking design element: the daytime running lights with its four "claws".

Yamaha R7: two cylinders for the track

Yamaha continues to expand its middle class.

The new R7 will enter the race by early 2022 at the latest.

The midsize racer weighs only 188 kg when ready to drive.

73 HP at 8750 tours and 67 Nm at 6500 tours promise plenty of driving pleasure.

The easy-revving two-cylinder baptized CP2 has 689 cubic meters and is an old acquaintance.

Tuned differently, it is also used in models such as the MT-07 and Ténéré 700.

With a top speed of 216 km / h, the R7 is significantly faster than the other CP2 models.

The noise level is surprisingly low for a sports machine: 88 dB (A) standing noise, 72 dB (A) driving noise - that is extremely moderate for a fully faired motorcycle with racetrack ambitions.

Yamaha treats its mid-range models to elaborate assistance systems.

ABS, driving programs, good isses.

Entry fee: 9,449 euros.

BMW K 1600: More pressure with the six

BMW Motorrad - not represented with its own stand in Milan - has used the Euro 5 standard as an opportunity to give the six-cylinder engine in the K 1600 model series even more oomph: 1649 cubic meters produce 160 hp in the current model year and now boast 180 Nm torque.

This power is good to use, because the luxury tourer weighs up to 370 kg, depending on the version.

In 2022, BMW will continue to build the four variants K 1600 GT, 1600 GTL, 1600 B and 1600 Grand America as well as special models in different colors.

In all vehicles, the electronic equipment and driver comfort are opulent;

Everything you could want in a rolling fairytale castle is installed on board the Grand America.

After reaching into the accessory box, the prices are between 25,950 and 33,000 euros.

Royal Enfield Classic 350: Decelerating included

Royal Enfield sold more than three million units of the Classic 500 between 2008 and 2020.

Then came Euro 5 and the end of the old half-liter engine on the European market.

Now the rustic single-cylinder machine is back: As an EU-compliant Classic 350, it is at the EICMA in Milan.

The timeless design goes back to 1948 and the G2 model presented at the time, the first Royal Enfield motorcycle with rear suspension.

The 349 cubic engine comes from the current Royal Enfield Meteor.

He makes a leisurely 20 hp and 27 Nm.

Royal Enfield promises a "smooth and refreshing driving experience".

Around 115 km / h top should be in there.

Two-channel ABS and one brake disc each at the front and rear should ensure contemporary deceleration.

The market launch will take place in spring 2022.

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR: "The hottest Speedy of all time"

180 hp at 10,750 revolutions per minute, 125 Nm at 9,000 rpm, top speed 248 km / h.

The performance data of the new Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR promise a lot of tinder on the road and on the racetrack.

Triumph sells the half-faired version of the Speed Triple 1200 RS as the "Café Racer of the 21st Century".

With its stylish half-shell, the new »Speedy« makes a real design statement.

For the first time, the traditional double headlight gives way to a round full LED spot.

In terms of handling, ergonomics and sportiness, Triumph promises "the sharpest Speed Triple of all time".

High-revving three-cylinder engine, robust triple sound, electronically adjustable Öhlins chassis, high-performance braking system from Brembo, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa V3 racing tires.

It costs.

From 20,400 euros.

Aprilia Tuareg 660: Power for filthy children

With the Touareg 660, the Italian manufacturer Aprilia is setting an exclamation point in the increasingly popular adventure middle class: the two-cylinder engine with 659 cc spits out 80 hp and 70 Nm of torque with a comparatively low curb weight of 204 kg.

It is progressing accordingly in a sporty manner.

An off-road test drive also provided good first impressions: deep sand, muddy passages and washed-out ruts?

No problem for the drive and chassis.

The electronics support is also top notch.

The Tuareg 660 is scheduled for delivery from December 2021.

In the colors Acid Gold and Martian Red, the motorcycle costs 11,990 euros;

for the version in blue-red-white paintwork (indigo tagelmust) Aprilia is asking for 12,690 euros.

The price of the Tuareg is thus between competitors from Yamaha and KTM.

BMW CE 04: Stromer for luxury lovers

BMW Motorrad sees the CE 04 electric scooter as a “surprising” premium offer for the “urban avant-garde”. The coup is sure to be successful in terms of design: the low-lying underfloor battery allows for an extremely narrow rear, a concise seat and a transverse helmet compartment .

The noble CE 04 is also unmistakable from the front - opinions will differ on this design language.

Technically, BMW is also orienting itself towards the urban environment with the environmentally and user-friendly CE 04 (top speed 120 km / h): The electric motor has a reverse gear and provides 15 kW of continuous output, enough to accelerate from zero to 50 km / h in 2.6 Seconds.

The 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack allows a range of up to 130 kilometers.

Costs: from 11,990 euros, also available as an L3e-A1 version.

Brixton Cromwell 1200: Striking mix of styles

Brixton, a private label of the Austrian KSR Group, has so far been successful in the light-power and half-liter class.

From 2022, the Austrians will have a powerful in-line twin cylinder in their portfolio with the Cromwell 1200.

The data are manageable: 81 hp and 106 Nm from 1222 cubic meters;

Traction control, two driving modes, ABS from Bosch, TFT display, LED lighting - that's standard in the class.

The exterior, on the other hand, is striking.

At first glance, the Brixton's engine layout and retro design are very reminiscent of a style mix of modern classics such as the Triumph Bonneville T120 and Triumph Street Twin.

The target group is also likely to be the same: Anyone looking for dignified cruising will also be well served with the Cromwell 1200.

The difference is in the price;

the Brixton bike in three colors is around 3500 euros cheaper at 9,999 euros.

Energica: Less pounds and more range

Because the big brands are still hesitant, the small series manufacturer Energica from Modena continues to lead the premium class of e-bikes.

The new EMCE drive package will be installed in the top models Ego + and Eva Ribelle RS in 2022.

The two vehicles are around ten kg lighter than the current model year.

In addition, Energica has tickled up to ten percent more range from the batteries - it is now in the city: 420 km, combined: 246 km and motorway: 198 km.

Energica has also fine-tuned the design.

The front and side panels of both Ego + and Eva Ribelle RS are now reminiscent of the Energica racing bikes, which will still be ridden exclusively in the MotoE World Cup as part of the MotoGP until the end of 2022.

From 2023 to 2026, Ducati will be the exclusive supplier of the standard racing machines.

ZERO SR: You collect via the app

In 2022, the American manufacturer will pack the latest version of its bike operating system Cyper III + into the revised SR series, which means that customers can now download performance options and upgrades directly from the ZERO online store using an app.

The new features include around ten percent faster charging, greater range (combined: 182 km), increased speed, heated handles and an arrow navigation option.

The disadvantage: The prices for the WiFi upgrades are steep.

For example, with the SR / F model (basic price in the picture), 17 percent faster charging costs 595 euros, ten percent higher range costs 1295 euros and the navigation function costs 195 euros.

In principle, batteries are now offered in two standard capacities of 14.4+ kWh and 15.6+ kWh for the SR models.

Husqvarna North 901: Relaxed travel

Husqvarna, known for sporty sport crossers and street racers with an urban look, is pushing its way into the middle class of adventure tourers with the Norden 901 in 2022.

The touring machine is inspired and powered by a two-cylinder in-line engine with 889 cc and 105 hp from KTM, but in terms of design and travel comfort, the Husqvarna has little in common with the rough-hewn original, the KTM 890 Adventure.

The developers promise that the Norden 901, with its high-quality chassis and a complete set of electronic driving support such as driving modes, traction control and cornering ABS, can do both: comfortable gliding over the autobahn and country road with enough power reserves as well as proper digging on gravel and off-road.

The Norden 901 is also optically successful - if you like old steam locomotive headlights.

List price: 14,649 euros.

Yamaha MT-10: Retreaded for Euro 5

Yamaha has made its naked super sports car eligible again and used the opportunity for both technical and visual upgrades.

The peak output is now called 166 hp;

the maximum torque is 112 Nm.

The top speed increases in the 2022 model year from 245 to 250 km / h - which is completely meaningless for a vehicle without a fairing.

On-board electronics and TFT displays have been extensively upgraded, and the Japanese have also improved ergonomics and design.

In addition to huge air inlets, the new front has double LED headlights with separate high and low beam.

Above this are wing-shaped daytime running lights in the mini fairing.

The Yamaha heater should be available from February 2022;

a price has not yet been determined.

Kawasaki Z 650 RS: Do it again, Kawa

The wild ride in the middle class continues: Kawasaki is now pulling the retro look of the Z models from the seventies over its current 650s.

This means that Germany's number three in the registration statistics will in future be two-pronged - as the jagged Z650 in the so-called Sugomi design and as the Z650RS in the look of 1976. Drop tank, high handlebars, simple seat.

Visually, the new Kawa is a thing of the past.

With LED light, LCD display in the two round instruments and 300 mm double brake discs, it relies on modern technology.

The two-cylinder engine has an unchanged output of 68 hp and 64 Nm.

Double throttle valves are designed to tame the response and at the same time enable rapid acceleration.

Prices start at 8345 euros for the black version.

More conspicuous paintwork such as "Candy Emerald Green" cost 150 euros extra.

Moto Guzzi V 100 Mandello: breaking with tradition

Moto Guzzi, which celebrated its 100th birthday in March of this year, presents its very first water-cooled V-engine in Milan.

The engine of the V100 Mandello sports tourer will have a displacement of 1,042 cubic meters and generate 115 hp.

The vehicle has been completely redesigned: the tubular steel main frame is minimalist.

He grips the steering head and just reaches over the engine;

the rear swing arm with the cardan is screwed directly to the gearbox housing.

The new engine is a promising platform, with two versions of the V100 Mandello coming onto the market in mid-2022.

Even the standard version has a digital cockpit, gearshift, driving modes, traction control, LED lights and cornering ABS.

The top model also has a semi-active suspension from Öhlins and a smartphone connection to the 5-inch TFT display.

Aprilia SR GT: Little friend in the urban jungle

In addition to Honda with the X-ADV and the new ADV350, Aprilia, the subsidiary of the Piaggio Group, is also discovering the scooter with an angular off-road look and somewhat coarser tires.

The SR GT runs in the small scooter class as an "Urban Adventurer" and is to be ordered in spring either as the SR GT 125 (125 cc, 15 hp) or as the SR GT 200 with a 174 cc single-cylinder engine (18 hp).

All models are equipped with a start & stop system that can stop the scooter after one to five seconds.

They go on sale in the three basic colors Aprilia Black, Street Gray and Infinity Blue.

"Top of the range" - according to Aprilia - is the "Sport" version (pictured) with red rims, the a for Aprilia and the spot color Street Gold.

Prices and delivery times are not yet known.

Honda ADV350: Successful style hybrid

When Honda presented the X-ADV five years ago, experts were puzzled: is it still a scooter or is it already a motorcycle?

The customers didn't care;

The rolling mix of scooters and adventure bikes is now the best-selling Honda two-wheeler in Europe.

With this successful concept, Honda wants to score points in the middle class scooter with the new ADV350: Striking design - for the Japanese it's an off-road look - paired with pleasing driving dynamics;

the single-cylinder engine with 330 cubic capacity develops 29 hp and has a maximum torque of 31.5 Nm.

A 37 mm upside-down fork takes over the front wheel control;

an aluminum swing arm works at the rear.

The equipment is complete: LED double headlights, adjustable window, large storage space for two helmets, connectivity and smart key remote control, everything on board as standard.

MV Agusta 9.5: Happy adventurer

The premium brand MV Agusta is also entering the booming business of mid-range adventure bikes with the "Lucky Explorer Project". The Italians are presenting two models in Milan: The premium version Lucky Explorer 9.5 (pictured) has been developed as a real on- and off-road powerhouse around a three-cylinder in-line engine. It delivers 123 hp at 10,000 tours and 102 Nm torque. In addition, full electronic support, a 7-inch color TFT display and navigation via app - all of very high quality, as you would expect from MV Agusta.

The off-road ambitions of the 9.5 are underlined by the long suspension travel and the 21 inch front wheel.

On the other hand, the Lucky Explorer 5.5 is significantly slimmed down: It has only two cylinders and 554 cubic meters;

makes 47.6 hp.

With the 19 inch front wheel, it is clearly road-oriented as a small travel enduro.

Prices are not yet known, but you can already order.
