The Prime Minister, Engineer Hussein Arnous, approved the recommendation of the Economic Committee, which included supporting the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, to extend the implementation period of the small family fish farms project for the years 2022 and 2023 in order to continue providing support to the countryside, encouraging family breeding of fish and distributing fingerlings free of charge to breeders.

The project aims, according to a statement by the presidency of the council, to preserve fish wealth, increase its production and develop it, spread the culture of breeding in family farms, support micro-enterprises and secure the work requirements of these projects.

Director General of the General Authority for Fisheries and Aquarium, Dr. Abdul Latif Ali, stressed the importance of the project in supplying the local market with fish production and securing additional material income for rural families, explaining that family farms achieve a double benefit from using the water generated by the basin through the production of fish protein of high nutritional value for watering crops and fertilizing Cultivated soil eases crop production costs.

Ali indicated that the number of family fish farms since the launch of the project in 2018 reached about 2,163 farms, where it started with 9 farms in Lattakia in 2018, then the project expanded to include the governorates of Homs, Hama, Lattakia, Tartous, Quneitra, Damascus countryside, Daraa, Aleppo and Sweida, while the number of distributed fingerlings reached 312950, ​​provided by the Commission for free, which is Produced by the Age Research Center, with the provision of technical supervision and training for the beneficiary families by the authority’s cadres, noting that the main objective of the project is to achieve sustainable development for the rural population and the application of the principle of vegetable fish farming, knowing that the productivity of the farms amounted to about 130 tons.
