In July, 321 people died in traffic accidents in Germany.
This was 44 more people than in July last year, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
Compared to July 2019, the year before the corona pandemic, 51 more people died in traffic accidents.
The number is roughly at the level of July 2018 with 318 road fatalities.
According to the office, the corona restrictions in 2020 and 2021 meant there was generally less traffic and therefore fewer accidents and fatalities on the road.
The number of injuries also rose compared to the same month last year – by five percent to 36,600.
More accidents and deaths again after the restrictions expired
The figures for July confirm the trend for 2022, that there will be more traffic accidents and traffic deaths once the restrictions have expired.
According to the statistics, the police recorded a total of 1.3 million road accidents from January to July 2022, which is seven percent more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Among them are 161,700 accidents with personal injury, an increase of 17 percent.
The number of dead was 1570 by thirteen percent over the same period last year.
Compared to the first seven months of the pre-pandemic year 2019, there was an overall decrease in road deaths by ten percent and injuries by eight percent.
