Bill Gates advises people to abstain from meat and thus turns the industry against itself: It strikes back and keeps the multibillionaire from his private flights and his investment in an artificial meat manufacturer.

The major German butchers around Clemens Tönnies attack Microsoft founder Bill Gates hard.

After Gates called for the renouncement of natural meat in his new book and promoted synthetic meat to protect the climate, an initiative of the German meat industry wrote him an armored letter this week.

“In your venture, don't hide the fact that you invested millions of dollars in founding the artificial meat producer Beyond Meat.

That undermines your credibility, ”it says.

Compared to livestock farming, other branches of the economy such as aviation would also emit far larger amounts of climate-damaging greenhouse gas.

This also directly affects Gates: "Your personal CO² emissions were ... due to your numerous private flights, 10,000 times higher than those of an average person."

In his book How We Prevent the Climate Catastrophe, Gates argues that cattle are responsible for a large part of the climate-damaging methane that is released into the atmosphere.

It calls for CO₂ emissions to drop to zero by 2050 in order to avoid huge environmental and economic damage.

To do this, "the physical economy has to be changed at a pace that has never been done before." CO₂ taxes, trading in pollution rights and alternative energies such as solar and wind are essential for this.

Transparency notice: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) is supporting the “Global Society” project of SPIEGEL over three years with a total of around 2.3 million euros.
