Guatemala: former prosecutor Sandoval files an appeal against the Public Ministry

The former head of the Special Prosecutor Against Impunity (FECI) of Guatemala, Juan Francisco Sandoval, presented this Monday before the Supreme Court an amparo to be reinstated to his post.

The presentation was made by the lawyer of the former special prosecutor, Claudia González, who told the press that the attorney general, Consuelo Porras, incurred in possible illegalities in the removal of Sandoval.

"We really hope that the Court can resolve this immediately because it is clearly illegal. We consider that Article 154 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala has been violated, which requires that all officials have to comply with the law. ", said attorney González.

CNN is seeking the Public Ministry's reaction to Sandoval's legal action against Attorney General Porras.

On July 23, Attorney General Porras removed Sandoval from office, a decision strongly criticized by the United States and rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch, among others.

According to the authorities, Porras' decision is due to alleged "humiliations" by the now former official against the attorney general herself.

After Sandoval's dismissal, a national strike was held on Thursday and several demonstrations broke out throughout the country over the weekend, especially in the Guatemalan capital.
