While trying to reach the United Kingdom by crossing the Channel on board a boat, at least five people died at sea, off Calais (Pas de-Calais), announced on Wednesday the Ministry of Interior.
“Around 2 pm, a fisherman reported the discovery of about fifteen bodies floating off Calais.
A building of the National Navy recovered several bodies, including five deceased people and five unconscious, according to a provisional report, ”the same source added, specifying that the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin was going there .

In recent weeks, the number of departures of boats and other vessels carrying migrants has skyrocketed.
The crossing is very perilous.
Seven people died in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais in 2020, after four deaths in 2019.
