The National Gaming Authority announced Monday launching a public consultation on the practices of gambling operators in terms of advertising, and in particular sports betting, in view of the abuses observed during Euro football 2020.

After having observed a "
targeting of young audiences
" and messages maintaining "
the illusion of easy money (...) particularly problematic
" during this demonstration, the ANJ announced, on July 21, wanting to better supervise the activity of online sports betting operators and prepare a consultation.

Faced with this same situation, certain European countries have already taken measures to limit the volume of advertisements or to frame their content more strictly
", she argues in a press release.

Enforce the recreational game model

A questionnaire open to all is put online on the ANJ website this Monday for one month, while a "
call for contributions
" from the professionals concerned, game operators, health professionals, competent public authorities, associations of care ... will be launched in parallel, she specifies. There will be added "
two citizen dialogue workshops
", a debate between game operators, addiction professionals, academics, the educational community ... and a "
workshop
" bringing together game operators and advertisers, co-organized by the ANJ and the Professional Advertising Regulatory Authority (ARPP).
The objective is, for the gaming authority, to "
propose new measures to the public authorities by the end of the year to ensure that the recreational game model is respected
".
The Secretary of State for Youth, Sarah El Haïry, wrote on July 9 to the president of the National Gaming Authority, Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, to ask her "
to consider sanctions
" against the platforms of online sports betting targeting young people from working-class neighborhoods.

In February, a Bondy Blog survey highlighted "
the ravages
" of betting in these neighborhoods, in particular the "
development of addictive behavior encouraged by targeted advertising
". Authorized for eleven years in France, online gambling is supervised by the ANJ, which has only been able to regulate advertising since November 2020.
