The information comes in drop by drop.

Friday, the writer Salman Rushdie, author of "Satanic Verses", was stabbed while he was on stage in the middle of a conference in New York State.

His alleged attacker was quickly arrested.

This is Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old man, who was born in California but currently lives in Fairview, a town in Bergen County, New Jersey.

The police said they do not know, for the time being, his origins.

He had bought a ticket to attend author Salman Rushdie's lecture.

Sympathy for the Revolutionary Guards

According to the New York Post, Hadi Matar was showing signs of sympathy for the Iranian government.

The American newspaper, citing police sources, reports that the suspect has posted messages on social networks in support of the Revolutionary Guards and, more broadly, radical Shiites.

On Twitter, a French Islamologist reveals that the alleged attacker had published, on his Facebook profile, photos of "figures of the Iranian regime, as well as its founder, Ayatollah Khomeini".

It was precisely the Iranian Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini who, in 1989 (the year of his death), pronounced the fatwa against the Briton Salman Rushdie, calling on his sympathizers to assassinate the author of the "Satanic Verse", who has since lived under police protection.

fake driving license

The NBC news channel reports that, according to several sources inside the investigation, Hadi Matar had a fake driver's license on him.

Also according to the French Islamologist who spoke on Twitter, the name used on this card by the alleged aggressor of the attack is "Hassan Mughniyah".

It could be a reference to Imad Mughniyah, a Hezbollah fighter.

For the time being, the New York police point out that the motivations of the attacker are not yet clear and that the first elements show that he would have acted alone.

The search of his home, in progress, should make it possible to learn more about Hadi Matar.

A bag and electronic devices were also seized at the scene of the attack.
