Chaos in the slush: A clearing vehicle was driving on a highway at a sporty pace - and damaged at least 47 vehicles.

Cleveland (USA) - Snow plows are supposed to make motor traffic safer - by keeping the road passable in winter conditions.

At the front, they clear the lane of snow, mud and ice, and at the rear they trickle salt or granulate.

They usually do this at a very comfortable pace.

This can sometimes annoy drivers who are stuck behind a clearing vehicle, but of course the whole procedure is primarily for their own safety.

The driver of a snow clearing truck on Interstate 80 near Cleveland in the US state of Ohio demonstrated how things can turn into the opposite, namely a hazard, at high speeds.

He was traveling at such a sporty pace that the dirty-grey slush, instead of landing on the median, flew in a high arc into the oncoming lane, as reported by 24auto.de.

Snow plow driver admits much too violently: car hurls into the area

And there the slick goo did significant damage for several miles.

A video taken from an oncoming car and posted on Reddit shows a particularly blatant case: A car swerves off the roadway and skids uncontrolled off-road.

The video can be seen here:

It didn't stop with this accident: The police reported at least 47 damaged vehicles.

Some drove into each other, others crashed into the crash barrier, and cracked windscreens were recorded.

The full extent of the disaster is also documented on video:

Unfortunately, it didn't stop with the body damage shown: at least twelve car occupants were injured in the various crashes and had to go to the hospital.

Fortunately, no one suffered life-threatening injuries.

How exactly the series of accidents came about is still being determined.

The snowplow driver, who has been working on the affected Ohio Turnpike for over six years, was tested for alcohol and drugs and has been suspended for the time being.
