A luxury mega-yacht almost 45 meters long, which anchored off the Spanish island of Formentera in the Balearic Islands, was destroyed by flames last Thursday.

The boat, named Aria SF and estimated at nearly 25 million euros, had just been delivered to its owner, the Italian multimillionaire Paolo Scudieri, last month.

The seven crew members and nine passengers escaped unscathed, Spanish sea rescuers said on Twitter.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

After continuing to emit smoke and heat for three days, the yacht ended up sinking on Sunday evening off Cap Martinet, Ibiza, where it had been towed, raising fears of a risk of marine pollution.

According to local press, it was around 5 p.m. local time on Thursday that the Spanish coast guard received a distress call, to which they responded by sending two rescue boats to the area.

At first, the crew had evacuated the passengers on other boats parked nearby, to try to contain the fire.

But faced with the progression of the flames, the crew members finally had to resolve to abandon ship.

Rescuers said on Thursday evening that the fire had been "

almost completely

" extinguished.
