Today concluded the work of the fourth annual conference of the Urban Economic Forum, which was held over two days in the Canadian city of Toronto with the participation of Syria, which focused on sustainable urban finance and building an international discourse on achieving a sustainable urban economy.
The Minister of Public Works and Housing, Eng. Suhail Abdel Latif, pointed out, in a speech he participated in via video technology, that adequate housing that meets the basic needs and requirements of the citizen and raises the quality of his life represents a global challenge, in light of the increasing urbanization, and is an important part of the comprehensive economic and social development process. and an essential foundation for the progress and advancement of nations.
Abdul Latif pointed out that Syria is looking, under these circumstances, for innovative solutions to improve the reality of current and future cities, and is working to develop its sectoral and spatial policies, in a way that responds to current changes, and advances them economically and socially, especially that the housing problem is one of the most urgent problems facing programs Development in Syria, especially after the war years.
He called for raising the value of official development assistance and enhancing financing for sustainable development, noting that the unequal capabilities to respond to the Corona pandemic crisis had a devastating impact on the economies and progress of developing countries.
Abdul Latif pointed to the need to develop follow-up mechanisms, continuous updating of data, and continuous evaluation of the extent to which policies, mechanisms and procedures are achieved in solving issues and problems related to the housing sector and sustainable development to achieve the desired goals, and ways of joint cooperation and finding a common vision and a common approach that connects all cities.
