The poet Mordechai Geldman passed away at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer. Geldman has won many awards for his work, including the Prime Minister's Award for Hebrew writers, the Brenner Award from the Writers' Association, the Bialik Award for Lifetime Achievement in Poetry in 2010, the Amichai Award and more. In addition, Gladman was involved in psychology, plastic arts and writing cultural criticism. In 2011, a collection of Gladman's poetry was published in two volumes called "I walked alongside you for years", which includes songs from all the years of his writing. In 2019 a third volume of the collection was published.
Gladman was born in Germany to Holocaust survivor parents. He immigrated to Israel in 1949, studied psychology and literature, worked as a psychotherapist at the Rudy Institute of Psychotherapy, set up an executive screening unit at Philat and served as a psychologist at the Senior IDF Behavioral Studies Assessment Center. The first to write openly about homosexuality, Gladman also published numerous articles in the press and six research and study books on psychoanalytic, artistic, and theological topics, and his main interest was in the psychoanalytic study of the self in the light of theories of yoga and Buddhism.
In an interview with Haaretz in 2016, he spoke of death: "You always think about who will close your eyes when you die. Who will take care of your funeral. I guess there will be some solution to that, and in fact, I always remind myself, it does not really concern the dead. Many people with whom I still have connections. For example, there is someone who came to me for treatment after he dropped out of all the study frameworks, and while he was in my care he graduated from two art schools and is now a really good artist. Sometimes I see him as a bit of my son. That I really do not expect anything from him, except a slight degree of gratitude that I feel when I encounter him.
"Death has always been my companion, for several reasons: one, it's the killing valley my parents came from. They brought with them a tremendous amount of death. My father, killed his family in front of his eyes, shot his daughter while she was in his arms. He was in Aktions in the ghettos but managed to escape "
