(ANSA) - ROME, 02 DEC - For years he has been the invisible man of the world cinema: he does not show himself in public, he has transformed his Geneva home into Plato's "cave", avoids official ceremonies, does not accompany his films, avoids even collect the prizes.

It is easy to predict that even tomorrow, the day of his ninetieth birthday, Jean-Luc Godard will be noted above all for his absence.

It would already be a miracle if he manifested himself as a poet in the ocean of the Net, but recurrence still makes noise.

Born in Paris to his Swiss Protestant parents on December 3, 1930, taken by the demon of creativity generated by the nascent "NouvelleVague", he films his first short films and becomes deeply friends with François Truffaut with whom in 1958 he made "Une histoire d'eau".

His friend passes him the subject of "Au boutdu souffle" (Last breath) with which he made his directorial debut in '59.

For ten years, until 1967, he will work on 22 titles (long and short) that make history, including "Le petit soldat", "Les carabiniers", "Une femme est une femme", "Le mepris", "Bande à part "," Une femme mariée "," Weekend "," Deux ou troischoses que je sais d'elle ".

In the meantime, he seduces his fetish actress, Anna Karina, breaks his friendship with Truffaut for questions of political and aesthetic ideology, distances himself from the current trends, carving out a role of polemicist.

In 1967 he chose the path of political commitment.

He directs "La chinoise" and starts his militant period culminating in the anonymous "Cinetracs" of the Dziga Vertov group, "Vento dell'est" with GianMaria Volonté and "Crepa padrone tutto va bene" ("Tout va bien") with Yves Montand of '72.

In the 70s it proposed itself as a pioneer of new technologies.

At the same time he also develops an aesthetics and unalinguistics of cinema that are absolutely outside the box.

In 1995 the Locarno Festival pays tribute to him with the Pardod'onore.

In 2011 Hollywood also bows to him with a career Oscar received in absentia.

He recently greeted the Cannes Film Festival with «Adieu au language» (2014, Jury Prize) and "Le livre d'amore" (2018).

For the occasion, the jury decided, in agreement with the Festival, to assign him a special Gold Palm.
