The boy broke out on Wednesday morning, as the "Hamburger Abendblatt" and the "Hamburger Morgenpost" reported.
He left his aunt's apartment without telling her about his plans, according to the "Abendblatt".
With this, the boy triggered a large police operation, in which, according to the "Morgenpost", a helicopter was also in action.
The officers searched for the runaway for around an hour before spotting him at the daycare center.
"The child was found safe and sound," said a police spokesman according to the "Abendblatt".
Children should stay at home "whenever possible" during the corona pandemic.
What exactly this means is interpreted differently by the individual federal states.
In some cases, only emergency care is actually allowed for children of parents with systemically relevant professions, in others - for example Hamburg - there is currently only an urgent call to care for the children at home.
