The eight-year-old managed to bring his brother back to the surface with great difficulty: In Butjadingen, Lower Saxony, a five-year-old drowned while bathing in the North Sea - and was then rescued by his older brother.

The two had gone into the water with their mother on Thursday at the beach, but had moved away from her, the police said.

When the woman was not careful, the child perished.

At first it was said that the boy was not available, which is why the emergency doctor was flown in immediately with the rescue helicopter.

The information was not confirmed.

Both children were taken to hospital for observation with hypothermia.
