When there is a party, many grab a beer bottle.

Electrolyte solutions should save the next morning.

Anyone who has ever had a hangover knows that there are nicer things in this world.

Party-goers who are fond of alcohol have developed a wide variety of tactics to avoid struggling with headaches and other hangover symptoms the next morning.

The “between water” is ordered, a lot of bread is eaten before the party night or the way leads to the drugstore or pharmacy to get a special hangover remedy.

Katerfly, Elotrans, etc.: Various preparations promise either not to let the hangover break out in the first place or to support the body perfectly in combating the symptoms.

But is it really worth it to reach for the sometimes expensive products?

"Pre-watering" and replenishing electrolytes: What works against the hangover

"If you know that you're going to drink a little something in the evening, you should be watering the whole day.

Preferably with mineral water," explained nutritionist Dr.

Yael Adler in a ZDF interview.

Hearty food on the day of the celebration also prevents the alcohol from being converted too quickly in the body, according to the doctor.

The main cause of hangover symptoms such as headaches and nausea after a party: Electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium or potassium are flushed out of the body through alcohol consumption.

“The fact is that alcohol drives water.

Then the next day you have a headache because you are dehydrated because the electrolytes are missing.

You have to fill that up," says Adler.

Electrolyte-containing solutions such as the diarrhea drug Elotrans contain sodium and potassium, among other things.

This makes it suitable for healthy people as an anti-hangover remedy.

However, the product should never be overdosed and people with previous illnesses should not take it without consulting their doctor or pharmacist.

You should also be aware that an extensive hangover breakfast or meal the day before the party can have similar effects - provided you rely on foods that contain a lot of magnesium, potassium and other electrolytes.

These include roll mops, tomato juice, chicken soup or pickles.

Foods that help against hangover symptoms

The Katerfly product also contains nutrients that the alcohol deprives the body of.

These include potassium, sodium and vitamin C. However, these can also be supplied to the organism – as in the case of Elotrans – through appropriately selected foods.

For example, orange juice contains a lot of vitamin C, potassium is found in bananas, among other things, and sodium in mineral water.
