With adventurous speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, a wrong-way driver near Stuttgart managed to lose dozens of patrol cars and escape - albeit in the end on foot.
According to the police, the driver of a black Mercedes AMG GT 63 S with a BC license plate had turned his sports car at the end of a traffic jam for an unknown reason and raced back to Stuttgart in the opposite direction.
Alarmed by emergency calls, the police took up the pursuit on Saturday night, but repeatedly lost sight of the speeder.
A police helicopter finally followed the car through the Engelberg tunnel on to the A8 in the direction of Munich to Mühlhausen im Täle (Göppingen district).
There the driver drove off the autobahn, left his car – list price from around 160,000 euros, more than 600 hp – and fled on foot.
The car was seized and the driver "could no longer be identified" despite the action of many police forces, according to a police statement.
Investigators are now trying to find out who was behind the wheel.
In addition to the helicopter, a total of 41 patrol cars from six police headquarters were involved in the nightly chase.
