Starting today, Cuba is hosting the third round of peace talks between the government of Colombia and the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) with the aim of reaching a truce that satisfies the parties and responds to the hopes of 'peace total' pursued by President Gustavo Petro.
Negotiations that began under the previous presidency of Juan Manuel Santos were suspended four years ago and resumed with the new presidential administration in November 2022, in Caracas and later in Mexico.
According to the director general for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Cuban foreign ministry, Eugenio Martínez, the best possible conditions exist in Havana for the new round of negotiations to lead to progress and a satisfactory agreement.
On April 25, announcing the resumption of dialogue, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez affirmed that his country will act with the traditional disposition and impartiality that characterizes it as guarantor of the process.
Meeting journalists yesterday in the Cuban capital, the chief negotiator of the ELN, Pablo Beltrán, assured that the goal "is to agree on a ceasefire", but asked for "realism" in his definition so that it "works 100%" .
