Advanced dementia makes you forget everything. But you can reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease. Lifestyle plays an important role.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia. Those affected are increasingly forgetting things. It often starts harmlessly, the car key is misplaced or when shopping the food does not end up in the basket, which is otherwise always thought of. But in the course there is an increased reduction in mental abilities. In the advanced stage, sufferers lose skills that they acquired a long time ago. Even one's own children or grandchildren are no longer recognized.

Although there are no cures so far, drug therapy can slow down the progression of the disease. In addition, you can effectively prevent mental decline.

Researchers around the world are working on the question of how to prevent dementia. What is known so far gives hope. In this way, the head can be trained and cared for like a muscle - which prevents Alzheimer's disease. What counteracts dementia? According to scientists, three rituals have an effect:

  • Drinking coffee: According to the science portal Spektrum, Dutch researchers were able to show that caffeine prevents Alzheimer's disease. For ten years, the researchers observed the health development of 676 healthy seniors. The analysis of mental performance showed that the coffee drinkers were mentally fitter than those who did not reach for coffee. The researchers' conclusion: coffee in moderation may protect against age-related mental decline.
  • Keeping the heart healthy through a balanced diet and exercise: What is good for the heart also benefits our brain. This is information from the Alzheimer's Research Initiative association. Problems that affect the blood vessels increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, according to the association. High blood pressure, diabetes or other diseases that affect the heart should therefore be treated as early as possible.
  • Maintain social contacts: When talking to others, our brain works at full speed. Understanding and processing what is being said and formulating an answer: all this happens in a matter of seconds. If you regularly exchange ideas with others, you automatically continue your education – even if it's "only" about a new cake recipe. The Alzheimer's Society Baden-Württemberg recommends: "Especially contact with children is a real "fountain of youth" for the brain!"
