Singer Danny Bassan, lead singer of the band Tislem, has filled huge halls throughout his career – but one of his most exciting performances was in front of an intimate and unique audience, some of them only four days long - in the NICU at Meir Medical Center.

The lead singer of the famous band came to the NICU at Meir Medical Center and performed an amazing "Enplagad" performance for premature babies and their parents in collaboration with Eyal Atsmon, a music therapist in the NICU who is also the sound technician who works with Bassan. "Music and singing are elements that are based on such a natural thing of taking air and taking it out, and it is not for nothing that music is a source of promoting feelings of calm and influencing various mental states such as stress, stress, post-trauma, etc., and gives many comfort and a sense of liberation." Emphasizes Eyal Atzmon.

"Music is the only thing that saved me and served as an anchor for me during the difficult life I went through," Bassan shared with the NICU staff and Dr. Yaron Mushket, director of Meir Medical Center, in his personal encounter with them before the performance. My father abandoned us when I was very young, and shortly thereafter I also lost my mother who died and was transferred to an adoptive family. One of the things my mother, who was a nurse, cared about was my musical side – we were the only family in Kiryat Gat in the early '60s that had a turntable and piano – and music was my strongest anchor."

Bassan performed for the excited parents, the staff and the tiny premature babies – some weighing only 650 grams, children's songs such as "Ship", "Hands Up on the Head", "Chorus of Hyacinth" and some of his hits. He also shared with the families and staff the difficulties he went through with his wife until the birth of his three sons, after years of fertility treatments, and dedicated to them with much love one of the songs that strengthened them in those days more than anything else – "Our Way". "When we started playing and singing this song, all the staff members and parents joined us in singing together, and it's really hard to describe in words the empowering musical experience that was felt in the room," Atzmon shares.

"The NICU at Meir Medical Center of the Clalit Group is a pioneer in the developmental supportive care approach for premature babies in Israel and the Middle East, is the only NICU in Israel that has received international recognition as a developmentally supportive NICU and is considered the leading NICU in the field of music therapy in Israel. The goal of the supportive care approach known as NIDCAP is to mitigate the stressful situations to which the premature infant is exposed, to promote closeness between parents and their baby and to create optimal conditions for his development," explains Dr. Tzofia Bauer-Rusk, Director of the NICU at Meir Medical Center of the Clalit Group.

"As part of the implementation of the method, emphasis is placed on gentle and gradual treatment while paying attention to signs of distress in the premature baby and providing support with four hands by the parent or another staff member during tests and treatments, the position of the premature baby, encouraging the kangaroo position (skin-to-skin contact in which the parent holds the baby on an exposed chest), low volume speech, dimming the NICU lights and more," adds Hulud Shavita, Director of Nursing at the NICU in Meir.

"The NICU at Meir Medical Center was the first in Israel to conduct research on premature babies and music, and implemented them as an additional means of reducing stress in premature babies, connecting with selected NICUs around the world who together continue to advance the field and serve as a source of inspiration and learning for other NICUs," says Prof. Shmuel Arnon, Director of the Neonatal Unit at Meir Medical Center of the Clalit Group.
