The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly reaffirmed Syria's sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan and its resources, calling on the Israeli occupation authorities to stop exploiting, destroying, causing loss, exhaustion or endangering its natural resources.
This came in the text of the resolution adopted by the Economic and Financial Committee of the General Assembly today, where it was approved by 156 countries against the opposition of six countries and 14 abstentions.
The resolution calls on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to submit to the General Assembly at its 76th session a report on the implementation of the resolution, including on the cumulative impact of the occupation authorities' exploitation, destruction and depletion of natural resources in the occupied Syrian Golan and on the impact of such practices on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The resolution also stressed the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
For his part, the Syrian delegation to the United Nations stressed that real and effective monitoring of Israeli violations and the study of their economic repercussions
The socio-economic situation of the Syrian population in the occupied Golan requires a sustainable approach to work, expanded sources of information, updated data and a clear legal position of the United Nations towards the Israeli occupation and its practices based on relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
The delegation pointed out that the resistance of the Syrians and their adherence to their mother identity and the Syrian identity of the occupied Golan deserve the United Nations and the international community to reject any unilateral steps to consider the occupied Syrian Golan as an Israeli occupation by taking steps and measures that support the right of the Syrians to end the occupation and put an end to these practices. Legitimacy Based on the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy, in particular Security Council resolution 497 of 1981, which stated that the decision of Israel to impose its laws, powers and administration on the occupied Golan is null and void and has no legal effect.
