Gauting - The Asklepios Lung Clinic in Gauting has received six additional ventilators. These have already been funded by new funds from the Free State of Bavaria. The lung clinic has come up with a few ideas to meet the increasing need for protective equipment and consumables in these times of scarcity. The Asklepios clinics currently have around 800 ventilation beds across Germany, including 20 in Gauting.
"I am extremely pleased that, in this phase of rapidly increasing patient numbers, we were able to reach the first stage of urgently needed expansion of the intensive care capacities so quickly and at short notice. Our patients benefit from these devices immediately from day one of commissioning, ”says Dr. Joachim Ramming, regional manager of the Bavarian Asklepios clinics.
The required funding for the establishment of additional intensive care and ventilation capacities has been applied to the Free State. Regional manager Ramming and the managing director of the lung clinic, Jörgen Wißler, emphasize that the cooperation with the relevant departments in the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care was quick and unbureaucratic. Own devices from in-house stocks are also used in addition.
Inventive in times of scarcity: protective masks that firefighters use are used in the Asklepios clinic.
Dr. Lorenz Nowak, chief physician of the department for intensive care, sleep and respiratory medicine in Gauting, explains: “For our work it is fundamentally important that the six high-end intensive care respirators have now been delivered in order to expand the intensive care capacities also on the desired to operate at a high level. "
The next step is to double the existing 20 intensive care places again by the end of April. "As a pandemic center for the district of Starnberg, we are thus equipped for a further increase in patients," said Nowak.
In addition to the ventilation and monitoring devices for the intensive care unit, so-called ABC masks have been purchased for the protection of employees during interventions, for example in the case of pulmonary mirroring. "We had to get creative, the available medical protective equipment is scarce", says managing director Wißler. “These protective masks have the clear advantage that they can be reprocessed and reused as often as required. We take them as a replacement for the glasses with visors that are normally used, ”says Wißler. These respirators are normally used by the fire service.
The pulmonary clinic is similarly imaginative when it comes to disinfectants for employees. The Bavarian government wants to supply hospitals and other facilities in the Free State with breathing masks, full-body protective suits, gloves and hand disinfectants. "The THW supplied us very quickly, which is a great relief," said Wißler. "However, we anticipate an increasing demand due to the special location."
The hygiene specialists at the pulmonary clinic have found an alternative in a pharmacy in Gröbenzell, which supplies the pulmonary clinic with medication: their own manufacture of disinfectants. Isopropyl alcohol was used for this. Wißler explains: “We store for the lung preparations in our pathology. The pathology needs about 20 liters a week. We had 100 liters of our stock processed by the pharmacy. The result: 130 liters of hand disinfectant. That helps us further. "
