The Sovereign Council, the highest ruling body in Sudan, on Friday approved a law penalizing female genital mutilation, an ancient practice that remained widespread in the country.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Department of Justice. The Sovereign Council approved a series of laws including that criminalizing female circumcision, a practice " which undermines the dignity of women ", according to the press release.
