Miesbach / Spitzingsee - The street is as narrow as the legal corridor. You can't avoid either. Nevertheless, the district and the two communities Schliersee and Rottach-Egern do not simply want to give up the currently closed bus route from Monialm to Spitzingsee. At an appointment at the district office, those involved discussed the next steps with representatives of Regionalverkehr Oberbayern (RVO) GmbH as the operator.

Even before the amendment to the Road Traffic Act (StVO), bus drivers repeatedly had problems overtaking cyclists and pedestrians, reports the district office. In 2019 there were even two accidents. And this despite the fact that the RVO has already used narrower buses with a vehicle width of just 2.38 instead of 2.50 meters. The now set minimum distance of 1.50 meters or two meters can still not be adhered to with a street width of a maximum of 3.50 meters.

In order to revive the line, the RVO is now looking into the procurement of even narrower buses. These are more manoeuvrable and allow more safety space in oncoming traffic. Since, according to Peter Schiffmann, Head of Traffic at the District Office, even with a width of two meters no StVO-compliant overtaking is possible, the timetable will also be thinned out (currently the buses run every hour during core times). That way, the bus drivers would have more time buffer in case they had to stay a bit behind a cyclist and wait for the next alternative point.

However, it is questionable whether the line can still be operated economically with narrower buses and thus fewer passengers per tour as well as a reduced frequency. The RVO will make a calculation for this and, in the event of an expected deficit, talk to the district and municipalities about financial participation. According to the District Office, it is "rather unlikely" that the journeys will resume this season. As a "small compensation", however, passengers could use the Suttenbahn as a connection from the Monialm to the Spitzingsee during the summer holidays.
