Since April, the slipping slope has been attached to the Hohenpeißenberg bypass.

Now all lanes are free again.

The drivers who regularly commute between Weilheim and Schongau have waited a long time for this: the traffic lights on the Hohenpeißenberg bypass have been dismantled, and all lanes are open to traffic again.

“The traffic lights have been gone since Tuesday,” confirms Eva Welker from the “Staatliche Bauamt Weilheim” when asked by this newspaper.

She was the site manager for the slope renovation on the B 472.

As already reported, the embankment at the Hohenpeißenberg bypass slipped on a 210 meter wide section and had to be rehabilitated.

That the slope was in motion was discovered in May 2019.

As a result, one lane of the B 472 had to be closed.

An appraiser was brought in who came to the conclusion that the slope had to be fortified, otherwise it would slide down onto the road.

Work started in April this year.

The construction crew worked their way in 25-meter sections.

At the beginning, everything went relatively smoothly, as the state building authority announced at the time.

Then it got difficult: the destabilization of the embankment was more advanced than expected, as site manager Welker says.

That also caused most of the problems during the renovation and ensured that the construction work was delayed: "The greatest difficulty was that the break reached up to six meters below the road surface." That amazed even the expert.

How far the landslide reached into the bypass road only became clear when the excavator opened the area, says Welker: "We were really surprised at how deep it went."

It was right to stabilize the slope quickly because otherwise it would have suddenly slipped onto the road at some point.

“In the long run, the embankment would have covered the roadway,” says Welker.

Now the crash barriers have to be attached, then the work on the road is complete and the speed limit is no longer applicable.

According to Welker, it is not yet possible to say exactly how high the costs for the renovation will be, but she believes that the estimated 2 million euros will at least not be exceeded by far.
