Address to Attorney General Mandelblit: "It is necessary to suspend Council Chairman Reina Jamil Basul who is accused of assaulting a woman."

As first reported in "Israel Today", an indictment was filed against Basul for beating a woman during a party at the Herods Hotel in the Dead Sea.

Following the publication, there is a call from women's organizations around the country to act to suspend it.

Among the applicants: the director of the Women Against Violence Association, Naila Awad, the director of the Nazareth Altafula Center, Nabila Espanyoli, the co-directors of the Mahalaf Little Ayalon and Fidaa girls' association, and the director of the Israel Lobby, Michal Gera Margaliot

Representatives of the organizations wrote today (Tuesday) to Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, Deputy Attorney General Dina Zilber, and to the Legal Adviser to the Ministry of the Interior, Yehuda Zimrat, demanding that Basol be suspended.

According to the indictment against Basul, who was even arrested by the Arad police following a complaint filed against him by the same woman, the head of the council and the complainant went on vacation at the Herods Hotel.

During the holiday, an argument intensified between them, and at one point the head of the council did not control himself following things that the woman threw at him - and beat her.

During his interrogation by the police, Sol denied the allegations and claimed that an argument had arisen between him and the woman that ended in nothing.

In a letter sent by the women's organizations, Mandelblit was asked to consider an appeal to the suspension committee, which was established by virtue of the Local Authorities Law (suspension of the head of a local authority due to the filing of an indictment).

"In our view, the nature and severity of the offenses with which Mr. Basol is charged, and being inherently offenses that undermine public order and the rule of law and which embrace the potential for disgrace, require such an appeal," the letter said.

The women's organizations also wrote: "In the circumstances of the case, it seems that the case fits well (unfortunately) with a broader phenomenon of violence against women in general, and in particular the sad phenomenon of violence against women in Arab society that has claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.

"The Supreme Court has consistently ruled that cases of violence against women should be aggravated. We believe that filing the indictment against Mr. Basol for the said offenses shatters the public's trust in its institutions and elected officials, and we see his continued tenure as a significant erosion of the rule of law.

"A public electorate should be a role model for local residents, a figure who must respect the rule of law and the sanctity of the body of every person, and especially women in Arab society who often suffer severe violence against them. In our opinion, According to the law, Lebel issued a sticky and forgiving message that "filing an indictment against the head of a local authority for assaulting a woman is a trivial matter."
