(CNN Spanish) -
The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, announced that this Tuesday he will send two bills to Congress so that "all women have access to the right to comprehensive health."
The first legalizes the voluntary interruption of pregnancy and guarantees that the health system allows it to be carried out under sanitary conditions that ensure health and life.
The second project institutes the "thousand days" program in order to strengthen comprehensive health care for women during pregnancy and for their children in the first years of life.
"I am convinced that it is the responsibility of the State to take care of the life and health of those who decide to interrupt their pregnancy during the first moments of its development," Fernández said in a video posted on his Twitter account.
He said that the criminalization of abortion "has been of no use" since these practices are carried out clandestinely in "worrying figures."
It was always my commitment that the State accompany all pregnant people in their maternity projects and take care of the life and health of those who decide to interrupt their pregnancy.
The State should not ignore any of these realities. # QueSeaLey pic.twitter.com/V7Lr6wBmuB
