Departmental and regional: two opposing ballots?

DECRYPTION - Both elections will be held on the same days, June 13 and 20. But with two different voting methods and distinct political offers, in the same territory.


The law of February 22, 2021 set for June 13 and 20 of this year the holding of departmental and regional elections;

a date that will be confirmed - or postponed - April 1, given the health situation.

Apart from the three communities with a single assembly (Corsica, Martinique and Guyana), voters will therefore participate on the same day in two ballots of a very different nature.

Because the voting method is not the same.

And, even more, because the political offer will also be different on the same territory.

A puzzle for all parties.

An alignment of the ballots

This is the fourth time that these two territorial elections will be held simultaneously.

This concomitance is due to a decision by the Rocard government to extend the mandate of the general councilors elected in 1985 by one year. The executive hoped that the concentration of the ballots would encourage participation - which was not the case.
