The corona pandemic has had a massive impact on accident statistics: there were significantly fewer crashes on the streets of the district in the past year.

The Dachau police are worried about the massive increase in accidents with e-bikes.

District

- The police counted 4128 traffic accidents in the city and district of Dachau last year.

This is significantly less than in previous years, for comparison: in 2016 there were 5005 accidents, in 2017 there were 4833, in 2018 there were 4819 and in 2019 there were 4814. In line with the decrease in the total number, the number of injuries also decreased: 708 in 2020 , whereas in the previous year there were 831 and in 2017 even 969.

Only the number of road deaths rose again in 2020 to ten - in 2019 there were four.

Andreas Knorr, traffic expert at the Dachau police, however, says that this increase is still "within limits" and is simply due to the fact that, unfortunately, there were accidents with more than one fatally injured last year.

According to Knorr, the cause of the accident was registered by the "classics": too little distance, too high speed and turning errors.

What Knorr explicitly does not list as causes of accidents: alcohol and drugs.

The statistics for 2020 show “only” 44 accidents involving alcohol and five accidents involving drugs as the cause;

In 2019, the number of alcohol-related accidents was 67, and there were eight drug-related accidents in 2019.

According to Knorr, there is only one reason for the decline in the total number of accidents as well as for the decline in alcohol and drug trips: the corona pandemic.

“There are simply fewer people on the way.” During the day, this was due to the lockdown or the fact that many saved themselves the trip to work and worked from home;

At night the streets were empty because of unusual festivals, closed restaurants and curfews.

According to Knorr, Corona may also have been a factor in the fact that there were significantly fewer speeding accidents in 2020 than in previous years: In 2016, excessive speed led to 187 accidents, in 2020 there were only 99. According to Knorr, the number of speeders has been declining for a long time: Due to the "comprehensive speed controls" by both the police and the municipalities, drivers have probably started to rethink.

These controls were continued "even during Corona".

What is remarkable about the latest figures, however, is that although the number of accidents has fallen by a total of 14 percent, one area is left out.

Knorr puts it this way: “In the area of pedestrian and bicycle traffic, we have not recorded any significant decrease in the number of accidents.” Specifically, the officers recorded 182 accidents with cyclists in the previous year, 30 people were seriously injured and 147 people were slightly injured;

In 102 of these accidents, the cyclist was the sole cause.

There were 41 accidents with pedestrians, two of which were even killed.

Of course, says Knorr, the corona pandemic is once again partly responsible for these numbers: people would have simply tried to be less on the bus and train.

According to the traffic expert, there is also the latest trend towards e-bikes: “There were a lot more on the road than in previous years, some of the e-bikes in the shops were sold out.” In principle, according to Knorr this development is "absolutely welcome" as it would reduce car traffic in the long term.

However, many drivers would “misjudge their bikes, the speed is simply higher”.

The result: 22 accidents with pedelecs, with four people seriously injured and 21 slightly injured.

Since a “disproportionate proportion” of pedelec riders are over 50 years of age, Knorr strongly recommends “driving safety training” or at least “practicing in the backyard” before the bikes are put into operation by their owners.

Speaking of practice: the long lockdown means that the schoolchildren lack “routine”, as Knorr emphasizes.

Road users of all kinds should therefore be considerate in the coming weeks, when the children will hopefully return to school.

These are the main accident areas in the district

There were hardly any changes in the main accident routes in the district in 2020 compared to previous years: According to statistics, the most frequent crashes were on State Road 2047 (285 accidents), State Road 2339 (131), State Road 2050 (112) and the B. 471 (30). The main accident nodes, however, show changes. Police expert Andreas Knorr attributes this to the numerous construction sites, which then led to accidents on the diversion routes. Examples: As the market square in Indersdorf was closed, there were six accidents at the intersection of state roads 2050 and 2054 (in the direction of Glonn). The intersection of Alte Römerstrasse and Sudetenlandstrasse in Dachau is also new to the statistics with 14 accidents; According to Knorr, the traffic has shifted from the temporarily closed Schleißheimer Straße there. The blocked town passage in Stetten meant that there were a total of 17 accidents at the already heavily polluted Indersdorfer Gabel in the Bergkirchen municipal area due to the additional bypass traffic, as well as eight accidents at the Rumeltshauser roundabout, which had been quiet until then. Old acquaintances in the statistics, on the other hand, are the intersection B 304 and Bajuwarenstraße in Karlsfeld with 17 accidents and Münchner Straße in Dachau at the level of the MVZ, where it rattled twelve times in 2020. zip
