The Government decreed
five days of national mourning
throughout the country after exceeding the 100,000 death toll from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic in March last year.
Through
Decree 459/2021
, published this Thursday in the Official Gazette, with the signatures of President Alberto Fernández and the Chief of Cabinet, Santiago Cafiero, the Executive declares "national mourning throughout the territory of the Argentine Republic for a term of five days, as a result of the death of more than 100,000 people, inhabitants of our country, victims of COVID-19 ".
Likewise, the regulations establish the decision to express to the families of the deceased persons "
the most heartfelt condolences
of the national Government."
"During the days of mourning the National Flag will remain hoisted at half mast in all public buildings", indicates the decree in its third article.
In substantiating the initiative, the Government emphasizes that "Argentine society must and wishes to remember and pay tribute to those who have left in this painful time."
In addition, the decree highlights "the immense pain goes through the whole of society for each and every one of the people who were fatal victims of the pandemic" and warns that this "is
a true tragedy
that plagues humanity."
"The best we can do as a society is that so much sorrow and grief become strength and impulse to go through the time to come together,
moving quickly
with the largest vaccination campaign in the history of the country," underlines the regulation.
In its foundations it also indicates that "it is essential that each inhabitant of the country be
fully aware of the risk
to health and life that COVID-19 implies and of the need to attend to personal and collective care."
"Given the dimension of the pandemic and the enormous number of victims of COVID-19, it is also necessary to carry out a national mourning that allows us to
remember and commemorate the deceased,
" the Executive transmits in the decree.
Argentina surpassed the barrier of 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday.
This was reported by the Ministry of Health when 614 deaths and 19,697 new infections were reported in the last 24 hours.
With these data, the total number of cases since March 2020 amounts to 4,702,657 while the fatalities are 100,250.
