The economy has been the engine of every human, developmental and productive work in societies and civilizations because man has many needs, but he cannot fulfill them at once due to the specific and available resources. To achieve growth and prosperity for the individual and the state.
Despite the amazing development of economics in recent times, a large group of traditional economics laws are still in effect to this day. On the other hand, a group of economic theories lost their credibility in the face of new economic mechanisms that imposed themselves in the place of traditional fields, including the knowledge and information economy, which provides a new reading of economics.
Within this vision, the book “The Basics of Economics” by Drs. Adeeb Mayala and Amer Lutfi, issued by the Syrian General Book Authority, presents an attempt to explain and clarify the science of economics by starting from the basics that must be installed in the minds of readers and then presenting and analyzing advanced topics in economics and helping to achieve a better and purer understanding of this Science.
The book, in its eighteen chapters, is based on three approaches. The first includes chapters from the first to the fifth, and works to establish the basic concepts and principles in economics, and continues in establishing the scientific method of the economic researcher, to then show how markets work.
As for the second approach, it includes chapters from the sixth to the ninth and deals with government policies in economic work and shows the importance of foreign trade, especially in terms of specialization and advantages to move to the macro economy and its most important indicators, which is the gross domestic product, which allows us to calculate the cost of living for people.
The third approach includes chapters from the tenth to the eighteenth that approach different topics, especially those related to the real economy, the financial system, savings, investment and the main financing tools, to reach the topics of money, the monetary system, monetary growth, inflation and unemployment, the impact of fiscal and monetary policies on the economy, the exchange between inflation and unemployment, problems and macroeconomic policy.
It is noteworthy that Dr. Adib Mayaleh holds a BA in Economics from Damascus University, a Diploma in Money and Banking Studies from France, a PhD in Economics in International Relations, Dean of the National Institute of Public Administration and Governor of the Central Bank of Syria from 2005-2016 and served as the Syrian Minister of Economy 2016-2017.
Dr. Amer Lutfi held the position of Minister of Economy and Trade 2004-2010 and Chairman of the Planning and International Cooperation Authority 2011-2013.
